Abstract

The object of this work is identification rather than interpretation. Together with those which will follow, it is an important step toward the establishment of an essential foundation on which to build emblem studies.

Abstract

This bibliography encompasses all extant books of emblems, works illustrated with emblems, and books dealing with the theory and practice of emblematics written by members of The Society of Jesus. Also included are translations and adaptations in all languages of Jesuit works by Catholics and non-Catholics alike. This bibliography will be to Jesuit emblematics what De Backer-Sommervogel is to the writings of The Society of Jesus. The complete Jesuit Series will probably comprise some 1,700 entries: about 500 first editions and a further 1,200 subsequent editions, issues, and translations. Many books are described here for first time. Of the 240 titles in this volume, 121 do not appear in Praz, 93 not in Landwehr, and 54 not in De Backer-Sommervogel. Part One also contains a substantial introduction to the various information fields that constitute the bibliographic descriptions.

Abstract

Professor Korshin delineates the development of typology from the theological to the secular sphere through a study of abstracted typology, or types that writers transferred from their customary religious contexts and put into various genres of literature, from poetry and fables to novels and histories.Originally published in 1983.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Abstract

The symbolic mode of thought and expression that produced the mixed art form of the emblem also informs and shapes much of the literature of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This study explores the relationship between the emblem proper and the literature of England and Germany during the period. The book proceeds from a definition of the emblem, based on a critical theory which has received little attention among English and Romance scholars, to a detailed analysis of the form and function of emblematic imagery in a variety of literary forms. The chapters following move into specific discussions of the structural affinities between emblems and poetry, drama, and fiction. The emblem-books are important as a cross-reference for the meaning of motifs in literature. They indicate what educated men knew about nature, history, and mythology and, furthermore, how they interpreted this knowledge. It is not only as a mode of thought but also as an art form that the emblem offers a valuable perspective on the purely verbal art of literature. Emblematic structure and imagery function as a formal, shaping principle in literature in all its genres and forms. Imaginatively conceived, carefully researched, and clearly presented, this book makes connections which will enrich the field of comparative studies.
